Rotating rodenticide actives in rodent control programs helps improve overall bait performance and minimizes the potential for rodent bait resistance:

  • Resistance Management: Rotating different rodenticide actives and avoiding overuse of a single active, can help slow down the development and spread of rodent bait resistance.
  • Bait Shyness Prevention: Rotating rodenticide actives can help prevent bait shyness, also known as conditioned food aversion; rodents learn to avoid a particular taste after experiencing nausea or illness after consuming it.
  • Improved Acceptance: Rotating to a new taste, or type, or formulation of rodenticide active can break the boredom and lead to improved bait acceptance and help improve overall rodent control.

Rodenticide Actives/Modes of Action

  • Anticoagulants: Work by interfering with the rodent’s ability to clot blood.
    • First-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (FGARs)
    • Diphacinone Rodenticide Active:
    • JT Eaton® Peanut Butter and Apple Flavored Rodent Bait Block
    • Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) Bromadiolone Rodenticide Active: JT Eaton® Nectus Soft Bait and Bait Block 2G
  • Non-Anticoagulant (Bromethalin): Work by disrupting the rodent’s central nervous system.

Recommended Rotation Strategies:

  • Rotate Regularly: Change rodenticide actives every four months.
  • Build in both Anticoagulant and Non-Anticoagulant Rodenticide actives in the rotation: This can help prevent resistance development by incorporating a different mode of action that does not show signs of rodent bait resistance.
  • Build in different Bait Forms and Flavors: Rotate between different bait types (e.g., 2G Bait Block, Nectus Soft Bait), flavors (Apple Bait Block and Peanut Butter Bait Block), and formulations (Top Gun All-Weather Bait Block and Top Gun Pellet Place Packs) to avoid bait shyness and boredom.

The Rotation

  • Spring/Summer Rotation: While rodent activity has moderated/now under control, 1st Gen Apple and Peanut Butter Flavored Bait Blocks are a perfect choice as a maintenance bait, getting excellent acceptance and results – especially important in months of high sales influx.
  • Late Summer/Early Fall Rotation: Just when a stellar combo maintenance/clean out bait is needed, we have Top Gun All-Weather Bait Block and Pellet Place Packs. Rodents eat as little as 1/8th as much of our stop-feed bait for a lethal dose (which occurs in 1 to 2 days) and the bait is less prone to molding – vital when needing a rodent bait to hold up as rodent activity increases.
  • Late Fall/Winter Rotation: With rodent activity now at its peak, we rotate to our single feed 2nd Gen Bait Block 2G and Nectus Soft Bait). Overall, our best performing rodent baits when we need them the most.
